Why you need Vitamin C in winter

by | Dec 30, 2021

Winter has come again, and it’s more important than ever to make sure we keep our immune systems healthy. An important way to do that is to make sure you have enough Vitamin C in your diet.
Vitamin C is important for general immune system health. It also plays a role in wound healing, collagen synthesis (for healthy skin), and the production of neurotransmitters. In winter, it’s especially important to have enough Vitamin C because diseases like cold and flu regularly surge in the cold months and your immune system needs to be in top shape.
Some health experts suggest that while it doesn’t directly prevent catching colds or flu, it can help shorten your symptoms.

How much Vitamin C do you need?

Health Canada recommends that most males have 90mg a day. Most females should have 75mg a day. The human body doesn’t synthesize Vitamin C on its own, so you’ll have to get it through your diet. Fortunately, even during our Okanagan winters, there are many fruit and vegetable options available that provide a good amount of Vitamin C. Mix yourself a smoothie today!

How to get it

Vitamin C can be found in a variety of fruits and vegetables including:
  • Bell peppers
  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Strawberries
  • Oranges
  • Pineapple
  • Cauliflower
  • Brussels sprouts
