The Okanagan has the ability to produce many different kinds of cherries, including Rainier Cherries, a large variety and a local favourite. They’re perfect for fresh eating because they’re so sweet. Van Cherries are smaller than other varieties and very dark in hue. They are also very sweet, a great choice for setting on the table as a fresh fruit, or canning. Most of us know about Bing Cherries, the largest variety. They resemble a heart shape and are a deep maroon colour. Bings are excellent for eating fresh or making into preserves and pies.

Cherries are a delicious and nutritious fruit that can be enjoyed fresh, frozen, or dried. Do you have a dehydrator? To dehydrate cherries, start by washing them thoroughly and then removing the stems. Next, cut the cherries in half and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Then, set your dehydrator or oven to the lowest and dehydrate for six to eight hours, or until they are dried out. Once they’re done, let the cherries cool before storing them in an airtight container. Dehydrated cherries make a great snack on their own or can be added to trail mix, yogurt, or cereal.
Cherries are an excellent source of vitamins A and C, as well as potassium and fiber.
